Since the arrival of multiplexes in India, there is a section in Bollywood that is dishing out movies
targetted for multiplex going audience. This elite section takes the burden to produce jara hut ke
movies. The Bollywood formula for jara hut ke movie is
- Find a Hollywood movie that wasn't a big hit
- Adapt the script to suit Indian settings
- Add a item song, but don't add any masala
- Promote the movie on social media
Chalo Dilli is one of those jara hut ke comedy movie. The movie seems to be "inspired" by Due Date
and Jab We Met. Chalo Dilli features the lovely Lara Dutta and talented
Vinay Pathak in lead roles. Lara Dutta is an investment banker with no-nonsense, go-getter attitude, whereas, Vinay is
just the opposite. Due to faith, Lara gets stuck with Vinay in a fun ride from Jaipur to Delhi (hence the movie name). The
ride from Jaipur to Delhi is full of cliches, with Lara missing her essentials, dealing with people that her persona will
never deal with and finding inner beauty of rural life. Vinay again plays the idiot role.
Lara has done ok for her role. Vinay was disappointment given that we have so huge expectations from him. He seriously
need to shed "play the idiot" role and venture in different roles. Movie editing is crisp. There is a surprise actor
in the movie. Yana does the Laila-Laila song, offcourse she can't match the sexiness of Zeenat.
The movie overall lacks punch, however, to be fair has some moments. Our verdict - wait for the DVD release.
In the meantime, if you really want to watch damsel in distress - go and watch Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.
